Lymfkärl i hjärnan
A University of Virginia 2016 published study has shown that the brain has more to say about the immune system that previously thought. Thinking that the body had been fully “mapped” and all structures identified it shocked researchers to discover lymphatic vessels in the brain.
“We believe that for every neurological disease that has an immune component to it, these vessels may play a major role,” stated Jonathan Kipnis, director of the U.’s Center for Brain Immunology and Glia. The discovery that there is a lymphatic system for the nervous system overturns decades of textbook teaching: “The brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought not to exist.”
Based on these findings, research at the university has yielded additional surprises. A type of lymphocyte found in the gut has been detected in the membranes surrounding the brain.2
